Easter Breakfast

This year our Easter Breakfast fundraiser will double as the Commitment Celebration for our capital campaign, “A Memorial For the People.”  The breakfast – pancakes, sausage, and homemade breakfast casseroles – will take place in the gym this year, and food will be served from 9:45 to 10:45.   A special presentation about the capital campaign will be made around 10:10 AM.  Every member of the congregation should be receiving a phone call inviting them to confirm their attendance at this special event!

This is a major fundraiser for our youth, 11 of whom are traveling to North Carolina for the Higher Things gathering this summer.  Parents of youth, and other congregational members, are invited to signup below to bring in casseroles for the event.  If you would like a recipe, click the “send me a recipe” button at the bottom of the form:

Easter Egg Hunt

All children are invited! Pitman Park is located on the NW corner of Evergreen Street and Newcastle Ave, just inside the 610 West Loop at the Evergreen St. exit.  In preparation, please leave donations of treat filled plastic eggs in the blue box located in the Commons by April 1st. Before the hunt, remind your children how Easter eggs remind us of the new life Jesus won for us on the cross! Youth Group and Jr. Youth Group members: We need your help! Please meet at 9:00am at Pitman Park to hide eggs and help with the hunt.  If you have questions or if the weather looks ominous Saturday morning, please call to confirm: Rachel 713.851.7329 or David 713.927.6341

February Youth Newsletter

St. Valentine’s Dinner

Our annual St. Valentine’s fellowship dinner will take place on Saturday, February 11th from 5 PM to 7 PM. Memorial’s own Kris Becker will be our special musical guest for the evening. A suggested donation of $10 per person will be taken at the door, with proceeds to benefit Memorial’s youth traveling to North Carolina for the Higher Things youth event. Babysitting will also be provided with donations accepted.

Junior Youth Christmas Party

The junior youth (6th to 8th grade) Christmas Party will be at the usual JYF time, the 2nd Sunday of December (Dec 11th) from 6:30 PM to 8 PM.  This will be our only junior youth gathering in December, so don’t miss it!  We’ll be in the youth room.

All 6th through 8th graders are invited to celebrate the Reformation of the Church and our sainthood in Christ. You may wear a costume if you wish. Prizes will be given to the best “angel” or “saint.” Please RSVP by completing the form below so we can have enough food and supplies. Please plan to pick up your child at 11 PM!

Junior Youth Gatherings

For the 2011-2012 year junior youth (6th through 8th grade) will meet regularly most 2nd and 4th Sunday nights from 6:30 to 8 PM in the youth room.  In addition to our regular meetings, look below for a list of special activities already scheduled.  Here’s a list of our regular gathering times for this year:

Junior Youth Boys

The Fall Food Drive for West Houston Assistance Ministries (WHAM) will take place Saturday, October 1st from 9-11 AM (hanging doorhanger announcements), with collection taking place October 8th from 9-11 AM.  Donations of non-perishable food items will also be accepted from the congregation on Sunday, October 9th from 9:00 to 11:00 AM under the covered drop off on the west side of the sanctuary.  This activity is for junior youth, senior youth, and MLC young adults.

The All Hallowed’s Eve party will be Friday, October 28th, from 6 PM to 12 AM (NOT  a lock-in this year) and will include pizza dinner, snacks, pumpkin carving, a costume contest, a scavenger hunt, bible study, and games.  Cost will be $5, and all 6th through 8th graders are invited.

VBS Teen Activities

All teens volunteering at our VBS are invited to fun fellowship events in the afternoons.   Here’s a list of the week’s activities:

Monday: Pool Party at the Taylors, 12 pm to 3 PM.  Free – lunch provided.

Tuesday: Go-Kart / Mini-Putt party.  12 PM to 3 PM.  $10 – lunch provided.

Wednesday: Bowling/ Lunch at McDonalds.  12 PM to 2 PM.  $10 + lunch money or food.

Thursday: Afternoon at the Movies:  12 PM to 3 PM.  Bring $10 for the movie.  Lunch provided.

HIGH SCHOOL ESSAY CONTEST

The Houston Chapter of Lutherans For Life wants to increase high school students’ knowledge and understanding of the importance of “Life” issues .

First-place: One $350 scholarship

Second-place: One $150 scholarship

Topics must be one of the following:Abortion, Infanticide, Euthanasia, EmbryonicStem Cell Research, or Post-abortion Problems

Who is eligible? All 11th and 12th grade students enrolled in an accredited Lutheran High School or members of a Lutheran church.  Submit entries by email with subject line “Life Essay Contest, Houston Lutherans for Life.”  Submissions can be emailed to Pastor St-Onge (cstonge @ mlchouston.org) by Thursday,  May 5.  All entries become the property of Houston Lutherans For Life.  For resources on the sanctity of life, see www.lutheransforlife.org.

MIDDLE SCHOOL ESSAY CONTEST

For students in Grades 7 and 8.  Sponsored by Houston Lutherans For Life.

Each student should write an original essay in the form of a letter to President Obama.  Essays should focus on the gift of life.  Since God is the creator of all life, then all lifeis special, unique and precious. Each student should ask President Obama to promote life in his policies and not to promote abortion, euthanasia, embryonic stem cell research or assisted suicide. A student may choose one topic or write about all life issues. Please include at least two Bible passages that inspired your work.  Submit entries by email with subject line “Life Essay Contest, Houston Lutherans for Life.”  Submissions can be emailed to Pastor St-Onge (cstonge @  mlchouston.org) by Thursday, May 5.
