Retreat Title: Islam and the West

Speaker: Dr. Adam Francisco is professor of History and chair of the History and Political Thought department at Concordia University, Irvine, California. He previously served at Concordia Theological Seminary (2007-2010) and Concordia College, New York (2005-2007). Before that, he was the Albin Salton Fellow at University of London's prestigious Warburg Institute (2004-2005). Dr. Francisco received his BA in Biblical Languages (2000) and MA in Reformation Theology (2001) from Concordia University (Irvine, California) and MSt (2003) and DPhil (2006) in Historical Theology and the history of Christian-Muslim Relations from the University of Oxford. He is a member of the Association for the Study of the Middle East and Africa and has authored a variety of books and articles including "Martin Luther and Islam", "Making the Case for Christianity", and "Resurrection Fact". Dr. Francisco is a US Navy veteran. He served mostly onboard submarines as a diver in support of the Naval Special Warfare (SEAL) operations. He is married to Rachel. They have four children and live in southern California where they attend Faith Lutheran Church in Capo Beach, and spend as much time as they can in the ocean where Adam practices his free diving and hunts fish (and the occasional shark) with a speargun.

Topic: Dr. Francisco will lead our study by looking at the rise of Islam and the socio-cultural/political challenge Islam has posed to western civilization over the centuries, including the time of the Lutheran Reformation. Most of our focus will be on modern issues (including terrorism, Islamic law [sharia], and Muslim activism) associated with Islam in the western world, especially America. Some attention will be given to the discussion of Christian approaches to Islam.
