From the Pastor
Active and Passive
One of my teachers told me that in order to understand the teachings of The Bible correctly, I must first understand the active and passive voices in English language. It did not take much time for me to understand the concept as some things are active and others are passive. In our gospel text for today two organs that belong to the deaf-mute man are in a completely passive condition. "Ears" and "tongue." They are helpless and must be acted upon. Jesus initiates the action in our gospel text by saying "be opened" (passive voice). He acts upon the passive organs and brings them back to life with the help of His Word. When our "ears" and "tongues" are in a spiritually passive condition, Jesus acts upon them and makes them active. He speaks the word so that our incapable "ears" may hear the good news. He activates our "tongues" so that we may joyfully speak and share the good news of Jesus. Amen.
