|MLC Welcomed 33 New Members|
This past Sunday we welcomed 33 new members into our congregation. Our congregational membership continues to soar. When you see someone whom you don't know, please greet them and ask, "How long have you been coming here." They may answer "2 months" or "20 years." In either case, you will have met someone new to you.
5th Sunday After the Epiphany
In this Sunday's reading from the Gospel of Matthew we have a portion of Jesus' Sermon on the Mount. After establishing who we are in Christ (blessed!), Jesus explains the nature of our common Christian calling in this world. He says we are to be both salt and light. Christians are called to be salt in the way salt was once used a preservative for food working against decay. We are called to be light in the way light brings knowledge and understanding to what was formerly obscured by darkness. We are not salt and light in order to gain God's love and favor. For Christ's sake, we already have God's love and favor. We are blessed to be God's salt and God's light in this world praying that others will, through the means of God's grace, come to "give glory to [our] Father who is in heaven" (Mat. 5:16).

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ of Memorial Lutheran Church and School:
It has been almost one month since we left Tucson, AZ and arrived here in Houston, TX. Uprooting one's life and putting it into boxes, receiving those boxes in a new city, setting up a new home, coming to a new school, preaching the first sermon, and leading the first Service have all presented different challenges to each member of our family. From the very first day, the people of Memorial have received us warmly and with open arms. You have showered us with your prayers, gifts, and other means of support. We truly appreciate all that you have done to help us. God's blessings to you all!
